300
In his review of the movie 300, Mike Wright of Norman wrote in the Oklahoma Gazette for March 21, 2007:
"As for Thermopylae, the number 300 refers to the fact that the Spartans used 150 pairs of men who were in homosexual relationship with one another. This history is valuable to know, because it undermines the stereotype of gay men as being mostly effeminate sissy boys.
"Hypermasculinity is idealized in gay male culture. Homosexual men enjoyed the upper hand in the ancient Greek world because they were the most ferocious fighters."
One can only imagine they enjoyed the lower hand even more. ;-)
